a hand full of memories

So much has changed during the 4-ish years our family has been gone from Texas.

One of the big things is that my grandparents moved from an assisted living to a nursing home.

A very similar thing happened with Gary's mom who was just a few years younger than my grandparents.  I leaned all the things my parents are learning now when it all started with Gary's parents.  It is not something you can ever prepare yourself for and in a nut shell it pretty much sucks.

Gary's mother had physical health issues worse than my grandparents.  My grandparents both have memory loss, but they are healthy for the most part.  It is very hard to see the people who had such a positive influence on your childhood not even know who you are.  Heck y'all, they aren't even real sure who they themselves are.  My grandma didn't realize my dad got married and wasn't sure who my mom (her daughter in law) was.  Eeyeyeye!

My grandpa looks so frail.  He was shivering and it wasn't even really cold in the room.  He was sleeping quietly and seemed just like the grandpa I remember, but he isn't.  His hair was much longer than I remember and he wasn't wearing his glasses.  I could really see his blue eyes shining, but there was no expression. His face was clean shaven and he had a bandage on his arm he kept fiddling with.  I've heard he has bad moments of irritability and grouchyness.  I think I'd be irritable too if I had to sit in a wheel chair all day long.  The nursing home is just a sad place and it breaks my heart.  My grandpa wants to be out working and doing man stuff, but that isn't his reality.  The nursing staff is awesome and do the best they can to help him feel like he's working.  The get him to put his flannel shirt on by telling him he's heading to work.  I think he is getting good care, but it's still sad.

My grandmother looks very different.  Her skin has a pretty glow and her eyes are a wonderful blue.  I don't think I ever realized how blue they are.  I don't remember ever looking at her and seeing her without makeup or jewelry.  Her hair wasn't curled and coated with spray-net.  I looked at her and remembered all our phone calls.  I remember her asking about Layla and Hayden back when she actually remembered them.  I think back to the long chats we had when I was a kid.  I remember standing on a step stool and making mac-n-cheese or scrambled eggs.  She would always encourage me and she was a great listener.

I think for me I have to stand there in the moment of reality and remember all the memories because they can't. I want to remember them enough for us all. I know they would be proud of me and who I am today. When I'm an aging parent I want my kids kids to remember me and the way I spoke to them and the fun we had.  I know they will see me in my shell of a body, but I'm doing things now to help them have more in the future harder days.  We're all going to get old y'all.

While I was standing there talking to them both yesterday I couldn't help but focus on their hands.  Their hair, faces and facial expressions look so different.  Their posture has failed, and their legs are tired.  But their hands still folded and laid flat and twisted and fiddled with their wheel chairs.  Their hands.  The hands that helped me and hugged me.  The same hands that have touched so many lives, written so many recipes and built so many projects in the garage.

I just had to grab my iPhone and take a picture of their hands.

Netsie and DeDe were here

We enjoyed a visit from my parents this week.  They drove 12 hours on Christmas Day to visit with us for several days.

They came with gifts for the children.  They got guns!  Layla was appreciative, but doesn't understand the whole gun thing.  I was the same way as a little girl.  Hayden was thrilled and ready to go shoot!

The weather was perfect the entire time they were here.  It was crazy December weather!  We spent a lot of time outside on the porch and even had several bonfires.

Cheers!!

DeDe learned all he wanted to know about the Wii U.  They played tons of games of bowling, golf and tennis.  I think DeDe wants his own Wii now!

As always we took them to our favorite Mexican food spot.  It was very enjoyable and we stuffed ourselves full of good food and Texas Margaritas.

Baylor played in a bowl game and my mom wore an LSU shirt.  She's lucky she got to stay in the house.  My dad is a huge Tech fan and LSU played Tech that same day.  So ..... mark this down as the year she brought the wrong shirt.  It was funny!

My parents always get lovin' from our dogs.  Lily was gazing at DeDe!  It was so cute and of course Daisy followed him around the whole time he was here.  They threatened to steal her from us.  No way Jose!

My parents gave us a popcorn popper for our basement.  What a wonderful gift.  We are so thankful!  We have made popcorn every day since we got it.  We have finally mastered the arrt of popping yummy corn.  When I say we, I mean Gary.  I need to pay attention in case I want popcorn for lunch one day when he's at work.  HAHA!

Layla is so focused in this picture.  I just had to post it!

Thank you for the fun visit Netsie and DeDe!!

Winter Break with my parents

My parents came to GA for their first visit.  The kids had the week off school so it was a perfect time!

We took them to our favorite breakfast restaurant, as well as other good restaurants we have explored in our new town.

The guys cooked chili and it was so delicious!  Hayden wore his brand new apron that Netsie made him.  He's turning out to be a great cook!

Us girls did girl stuff like hair conditioning and eyebrow waxing while the guys went to the Glock factory.

Hayden looks so official with his badge.

Lily and Daisy had a fun week too with my parents around.

We explored a local gun range and it was very nice and women shoot free on Thursday.

My dad helped me learn about my gun.  He is a great teacher and knows tons about guns.  It's a great hobby to have!

The kids sat with us while we shot and they were so curious.  It was so cold in the range, and they did great even with the cold temps.  I'm so thankful we have the right to be educated about guns and gun safety.  This range even offers a gun safety class for kids.

After shooting we ate a yummy Mexican lunch at our favorite Mexican restaurant.  I had chicken tacos and they were amazing and very fresh.  I love their beans and I hope to make a batch as good as theirs soon.  I can't wait!

We had a fun week even though the weather was yucky and cold most of the time.  We're still anxiously waiting for spring weather!  Thanks for the fun visit Netsie and DeDe!

fun father's day festivities

We had a fun Father's Day weekend celebrating my favorite dads.

We had homemade ice-cream.  Mmmmm!  It was a wonderful treat!

LK stole my camera and took tons of pictures.

{I love my sweet little man}

Not to bad for an amateur...huh?!

I had fun with the camera too.  We took Daisy with us to play with my parents 3 dogs.
All the pets got along great!

It was a fun adventure and I think Daisy has napped since we got home earlier today.

The kids always have fun exploring in Netsie and DeDe's backyard.

This child kills me. Oh how I love her!

Gary got his Father's Day wish.  All he wanted to do was watch the US Open golf tournament on TV.  That is what we have been doing!

We had a fun weekend.  We are blessed!

remembering a great man

8 years ago today we lost Gary's amazing father.
8 years means he never got to meet his grand kids.  It breaks my heart they will never know him.

Yesterday we ate steaks in his honor while watching NASCAR, his favorite sport.  Every single Sunday afternoon Gary and I would go have a steak dinner with his parents.

Gary's dad would load up his baked potato with baked beans.  I eat my baked potatoes this way now just because I know he would like it.  We sat at the dinner table with the kids last night and told silly stories about the Papaw and the fun we used to have!

I'm so thankful I knew him.  I miss him more and more every day.

our kid-free weekend

We had a wonderful weekend!
My parents offered to keep the kids for the weekend, so of course we took them up on their offer.

Before dropping the kids off at my parents house on Friday we took them to visit my grandparents.  My grandparents are the sweetest people and I have so many childhood memories with them as a kid.  It pains me every time I see my grandparents.  They are just not the same.  They are so forgetful.  They can barely remember Hayden's name, but the joy in their eyes when they see the kids is heartwarming.   They love their great-grand babies so much.

My parents pretty much spoiled the kids rotten all weekend long.  You won't catch me complaining about that.  I think grandparents are supposed to spoil their grand-babies...it is their JOB!  Layla got a back-to-school pedicure.  The four of them went to see the Smurfs.  I think Hayden shot a BB gun for the first time.  They had a BIG time and the kids came home on Sunday with tons of fun stories of their adventures.

Gary and I ended up grabbing drinks and appetizers on Friday night.  It was weird.  We don't typically eat out at night.  We are always home tucking the kids into bed when it is getting dark.  We went to a fun local  restaurant/brewery.  I love trying different beers on tap, so I was excited to drink something other than a regular lite beer.  We had the best avocado egg rolls and an amazing Oreo dessert.

The picture quality isn't that great...my phone takes horrible pictures.
I am due for an iPhone upgrade in October....I can't WAIT!

We slept in until 9:00 am on Saturday morning.  That is late for us!!  It was nice.  Gary and I ran to the grocery store kid free, which was fun and then just pretty much did nothing the rest of the day.   I MUST mention Bogey...he got a brand spankin' new collar.  Isn't he cute hammin' it up...

Saturday night we went to dinner with friends at Pappasito's Mexican restaurant.

Our dining experience is one we won't soon forget.  A waiter pretty much dumped a full tray of hot food on the floor right next to our table.  We were so hungry I was ready for our shrimp and beef fajitas.   Food was flying across the patio and some even landed on Gary and our friend John.  Gary said he was worried when he saw the dude lose the tray, but he never thought the food would end up on him.  It was wild to say the least.  The four of us just laughed about it the rest of the night.  Since I mentioned the patio...we sat on the patio.  How exciting is that??  The weather on Saturday was wonderful.  We were comfortable all day long.  I think the high temperature was 89 degrees.  So nice after a super hot last few months.  After dinner we had high hopes of heading to the Stockyards, but we were so full.  We ended up just hanging out chatting here at the house.  It was a fun adult night.

Sunday morning Gary and I slept late again until around 9:00 again.  My parents were kind enough to drive the kids home.    I cooked 3 new recipes, and we basically lounged around the rest of Sunday.

I will hopefully post a few of these recipe this week.  I found them on pinterest.

This coming week is the last week of summer.  Layla starts school on August 23.  We are going to enjoy our last week of freedom, although it is already busy.  Sadly, my ear infection is NOT better, I have a few appointments this week to decide on the next step for relief for me.  Layla starts soccer practice, and we are planning to spend a big chunk of time at the pool soaking in every last bit of summer we can.

Have a great Monday!
